New Tools to Process Data in Different Byte Orders Across Platforms

MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 27, 2010) — Innovative Routines International Inc. (IRI), Inc., announced that it has solved a problem inherent with migrating data across different endian architectures (e.g. a binary file created on a mainframe but read on a PC). Binary numerics and multi-byte character data from “big endian” computers do not process correctly on “little endian” computers, and vice versa, due to the byte ordering differences imposed by CPU architectures. To overcome this, IRI will deliver endian designation and migration functionality in its software to process data from, or convert data to, either architecture.

IRI’s ability to maintain and change the endianness of data means that files can be correctly processed on big, little, or bi-endian hardware. IRI support lead Rob Howard explained that “this will allow companies to off-load work onto computers with more capacity but different endianness.”

Field-level endian control facilitates the movement of data into and out of files and databases for data integration. “Users will be able to output big and little endian data to one or more targets simultaneously. This precludes the need for additional passes and associated data synchronization,” Howard added.

IRI will first deliver endianness support in three of its current tools:.

CoSort:
Inputs, processes, and outputs data as big or little endian regardless of the endianness of the execution platform. Processing includes transformation and reporting operations like selection, sorting, joining, aggregation, calculation, and reformatting.

NextForm:
Converts the byte order of files and fields to migrate data across platforms.

RowGen:
Generates test data – files and fields – with the endianness required for each.

IRI Delivers Targeted Data Encryption, Masking

MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 6, 2010) — Innovative Routines International Inc. (IRI), Inc., has released the world’s first cross-platform, data-centric protection utility for files. FieldShield protects personally identifying information (PII) in flat files down to the field level, according to business rules. FieldShield’s protections include:

AES-256 and custom encryption (decryption)

Masking via anonymization or pseudonymization

De- and re-identification

Filtering and redaction

Users can assign any function to any column. “If mixed functions or encryption keys were specified, even if the file or other fields were compromised, the remaining data would still be safe. Also, when you shield only the private fields, the non-sensitive fields stay visible and useable,” noted IRI support lead Rob Howard.

Protection and formatting functions defined in simple job scripts allow FieldShield users to mask fields based on the nature of the data and its destination(s). One concealment job can produce one output safe for multiple recipients, where each runs their own FieldShield job to reveal only the entitled data elements. This saves job design and execution time, and avoids data synchronization issues.

By being more targeted than device and network encryption, FieldShield secures large volumes faster. “It’s also easier to configure than database column encryption,” Howard observed.

According to Pedro Velez Diaz of I2 Systems and Security, “data security is of paramount importance to my customers, and we see the need for field encryption beyond the database. Enterprise users needing to protect files will find FieldShield extremely valuable.”

FieldShield runs on Windows, Linux and Unix platforms, and protects data in these file formats:

Line, record, variable sequential

MF ISAM and Vision index

MF COBOL long/short variable

Fixed blocked

Variable blocked

Fixed length text

CSV, delimited

LDIF

XML (flattened)

CLF, ELF web logs

FieldShield’s audit logs help verify compliance with data privacy laws. For more information, visit www.iri.com/FieldShield or email FieldShield@iri.com.

NextForm v2 GUI Controls Multiple File, Field Conversions

MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 9, 2010) — Innovative Routines International Inc. (IRI), Inc., a leading developer of data manipulation software, is now shipping release 2 of NextForm, for large file and data type conversions.
According to users like Collin Perry of Sailpoint Technologies, NextForm v1 “worked well for converting our CSV and LDIF files” but a GUI job specification editor would “help users master the functionality and run faster.” Thus, v2 is controlled through an easy-to-use Java GUI called “NextForm Builder.”

NextForm Builder represents a substantial ergonomic improvement in sequential file and field remapping,” explains David Friedland, IRI’s business development vice president. “The wizard allows you to point and click between XML, COBOL and text, LDIF and CSV files, and between EBCDIC and ASCII fields, packed decimal and numeric, etc.”

Unlike other conversion tools (especially for XML and LDIF) that cannot handle high volumes, NextForm converts multi-gigabyte files quickly and with maximum flexibility. Users can also reformat files by changing field layouts from fixed to variable (or vice versa), move fields around, limit fields on output, or create multiple output files (and formats) from a single input format. The NextForm Builder GUI features a preview option to validate conversions, and supports both immediate execution and job exportation for command line or batch operations.

NextForm on Windows starts at US$400, and is discounted in volume. Additional fees apply on Unix platforms, and for COBOL index file support.

An upcoming NextForm version will reformat variable blocked (VB) and spanned (VBS) files, and change between big and little endian data – both at the file and field level. This will allow users to track, convert, and process their data across platforms, regardless of its source.
