NextForm is also available for other platforms, and all NextForm jobs are supported in the &lt;a href=&quot;http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/voracity&quot;&gt;IRI Voracity&lt;\/a&gt; data management platform (for data discovery, integration, migration, governance, and analytics).'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> converts structured, or flat files to and from a variety of other formats, including fixed and delimited text, CSV, LDIF, XML, COBOL, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This how-to example converts a delimited text file to a fixed-position layout, though similar steps can be followed for other file-to-file conversions. The same wizard can also be used to convert field data types and endian states at the field or file level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first page of the wizard sets up the job with the location, name and options, such as whether you want to create the job as a script (in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/nextform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NextForm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .ncl or CoSort <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/cosort\/sortcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SortCL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .scl <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/cosort\/sortcl-metadata\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">format<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/voracity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voracity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .flow file (containing the .*cl script within). For this example, we will call our job file name <\/span><b>delimited_to_fixed.ncl <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(for NextForm Control Language).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-New-Format-Job.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10051\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-New-Format-Job.png\" alt=\"New Format Job\" width=\"485\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-New-Format-Job.png 485w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-New-Format-Job-276x300.png 276w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the second screen, click <\/span><b>Add Data Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to specify the input file <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chiefs.sep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You must also have the metadata for the input data. Since we have the metadata for this example, click <\/span><b>Add Existing Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and select <\/span><b>chiefs.ddf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the following message appears:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like to copy the fields in the DDF to the job section? If No is selected, then a \/SPECIFICATION with a reference to the DDF will be added<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Yes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to display the fields. Although we have existing metadata for this example, alternatively, you could click <\/span><b>Discover Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create a new DDF for it automatically. To make this change, click <\/span><b>Edit Source Options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open the source options editor. Change the format from <\/span><b>RECORD <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to \u00a0<\/span><b>DELIMITED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/3-Source-Options.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/3-Source-Options.png\" alt=\"Source Options\" width=\"525\" height=\"710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/3-Source-Options.png 525w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/3-Source-Options-222x300.png 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nAs you can see, a fuller range of supported source file formats are available to choose from, and this list is also exposed in the target options. These menus allow you to convert from an LDIF file to CSV, an ODBC-connected DB table to an XML file, MF Vision to text, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After specifying the data source, you are ready to specify the target file and its layout. Click <\/span><b>Next <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to open the <\/span><b>Data Targets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this screen, click <\/span><b>Add Data Target<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open the Data Target dialog. In the <\/span><b>File <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field, enter the name <\/span><b>fixed_file<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the output file. Since this will be a fixed file, you need to change the format from <\/span><b>RECORD <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>FIXED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so click <\/span><b>Edit Target Options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open <\/span><b>Target Options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make the change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make the new fixed file data easier to read and understand, add a header to the top to define the columns of data. \u00a0Still on the Target Options editor, go to the <\/span><b>Header Record<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field and enter the following header, including the double quotes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>President<\/strong> &lt;13 spaces&gt; <strong>Votes<\/strong> &lt;2 spaces&gt; <strong>Service<\/strong> &lt;6 spaces&gt; <strong>Party<\/strong> &lt;1 space&gt; <strong>St<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of spaces indicates actual spaces entered with the keyboard spacebar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4-Target-Options.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10054\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4-Target-Options.png\" alt=\"Target Options\" width=\"525\" height=\"727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4-Target-Options.png 525w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4-Target-Options-217x300.png 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nNote, again, the format could have been another file format. Click <\/span><b>OK <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to close Target Options.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back on the Data Targets page, click <\/span><b>Target Field Layout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now click the Fixed\/Delim icon<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10055 size-full\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: relative; top: 20px; padding: 0 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/F-D-icon.png\" alt=\"Fixed\/Delim icon\" width=\"23\" height=\"20\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the top of the Targets section. In the <\/span><b>Type <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field, select <\/span><b>Fixed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must now assign the position and size for each field. Click the position value and the size value on each field and specify the following values:<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\npres &#8211; position=1, size=22<br \/>\nvotes &#8211; position=23, size=5<br \/>\nservice &#8211; position=30, size=12<br \/>\nparty &#8211; position=43, size=5<br \/>\nstate &#8211; position=49, size=3<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/5-Target-Field-Layout.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10056\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/5-Target-Field-Layout.png\" alt=\"Target Field Layout\" width=\"600\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/5-Target-Field-Layout.png 670w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/5-Target-Field-Layout-300x269.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFrom the Targets section of this editing dialog, you can also right-click to edit the layout of each target field. This allows you to remove a field or modify its order, data type, endian, separator (or in this case, fixed byte offset), and other formatting attributes. You can also apply field-level mapping functions and rules, including string manipulations and cross-calculations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are done, click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to close the Target Field Layout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The converted file will look better if there is some space after the header, before the first row of data. To do this, click <\/span><b>Edit Target Options <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to open the editor again. In the<\/span><b> Header Record<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field, after St (2-letter state), before the closing quotation marks, enter <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This adds two line feeds to the header. Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back again on the Data Targets screen, click <\/span><b>Finish <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to complete and open the script.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/6-Data-Targets-script.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10057\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/6-Data-Targets-script.png\" alt=\"Data Targets script\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/6-Data-Targets-script.png 815w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/6-Data-Targets-script-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/6-Data-Targets-script-768x459.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nYou can modify this script in the color-coded, syntax-aware editor directly, or by right-clicking in the script (or relevant portions of the outline) to open dialogs that expose the same parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run the script by right-clicking in the script and selecting <\/span><b>Run As <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-&gt;<\/span><b> IRI Job<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
