The \u201cNew Reformat Job\u201d wizard in the <\/span>IRI Workbench<\/span><\/a> NextForm menu virtualizes disparate data sources to produce immediate, fit-for-purpose views. This feature provides a simple and free or low-cost data federation vehicle for <\/span>IRI NextForm<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>IRI CoSort<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>IRI Voracity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0platform users. <\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cData federation technology can be used in place of a <\/span><\/i>data warehouse<\/span><\/i><\/a> to save the cost of creating a permanent, physical <\/span><\/i>relational database<\/span><\/i><\/a>. It can also be used as an enhancement to add fields or attributes that are not supported by the data warehouse application programming interface (<\/span><\/i>API<\/span><\/i>). <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

This approach is especially useful if some of an organization’s data is stored offsite by a third-party cloud service provider. It allows the person performing the analysis to aggregate and organize data quickly without having to request synchronization logic or copy the data until it’s absolutely necessary.<\/span><\/i>\u201d \u00a0– <\/em><\/span>TechTarget SearchDataManagement.com<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/i>In this how-to example, the wizard combines data elements from a database table and a delimited file, and sends pertinent, reformatted information to the console. You can follow similar steps to federate other data combinations and what-if scenarios, and save them to (persistent) targets, if preferred.<\/span><\/p>\n

Target option and field editing dialogs exposed in the same wizard can also be used for cross-calculation, remapping, masking, type conversion, string manipulation, etc.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting Underway<\/b><\/h3>\n

The first page of the wizard sets up the job with the location, name and options, such as whether you want to create the job as a script (in <\/span>NextForm<\/span><\/a> .ncl or CoSort <\/span>SortCL<\/span><\/a> .scl <\/span>format<\/span><\/a>) or a <\/span>Voracity<\/span><\/a> .flow file (containing the .*cl script within). For this example, we will call our job file name <\/span>datafederation.ncl <\/b>(for NextForm Control Language).<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSpecifying the Source(s)<\/b><\/h3>\n

On the second screen, click <\/span>Add Data Source<\/b> to add the first of the two sources used for this example. On the Data Source dialog that opens, select <\/span>ODBC <\/b>and click <\/span>Browse<\/b>. Select <\/span>Oracle <\/b>in the <\/span>Data source name<\/b> field. From the tables listed in the <\/span>Table name<\/b> field, select <\/span>JOB_HISTORY<\/b> and click <\/span>OK<\/b>. Click <\/span>OK <\/b>again to close the Data Source dialog.<\/span><\/p>\n

You must also have the metadata for this table. Since we have the metadata for this example, click <\/span>Add Existing Metadata<\/b>, and select <\/span>historytable.ddf<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After you click <\/span>OK<\/b>, the following Save specification message appears:<\/span><\/p>\n

Would you like to copy the fields in the DDF to the job section? If No is selected then a \/SPECIFICATION with a reference to the DDF will be added<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Click <\/span>Yes <\/b>to display the fields. Although we have existing metadata for this example, alternatively, you could click <\/span>Discover Metadata<\/b> to create a new ddf for it automatically. See <\/span>Using the Metadata Discovery Wizard<\/span><\/a> for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click <\/span>Add Data Source<\/b> again to specify the second source. Select <\/span>Files <\/b>and click <\/span>Browse <\/b>to find and select the file name <\/span>jobs.txt<\/b>, which you should have saved in your file directory. If you have the file in your project folder, enter the filename instead. Click <\/span>OK<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We want the format of this file to be CSV, so click <\/span>Edit Source Options<\/b>. In the <\/span>Format <\/b>field, select <\/span>CSV<\/b>, and then click <\/span>OK<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click <\/span>Add Existing Metadata<\/b> and select <\/span>jobs.ddf<\/b>. When you click <\/span>OK<\/b>, the Save specification message opens again. Click <\/span>Yes<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCreating the Virtual (Combination) Records<\/b><\/h3>\n

Next, we need to define a pre-action layout (INREC section) to combine specific elements in the different sources, in this case, the JOB_HISTORY table and the jobs.txt file.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click <\/span>Pre-Action Layout<\/b> on the Data Sources screen. On screen that opens, click <\/span>Edit Pre-Action Layout<\/b>. This opens the Pre-Action Field Layout editing screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Sources section at the top, select the jobs tab to show the fields in jobs.txt. Click the <\/span>JOB_ID<\/b> row and drag it to the Pre-Action section below.
\n<\/span>Highlight that row by clicking it. Now click the Fixed\/Delim icon\"Fixed\/Delimat the top of the <\/span><\/span>Pre-Action section. In the <\/span>Type <\/b>field, select <\/span>Fixed <\/b>and click <\/span>OK<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click the value in the <\/span>Size <\/b>column and change it to <\/span>10<\/b>. Click <\/span>OK<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBack on the Pre-Action screen, click\u00a0<\/span>Next <\/b>to move on to Data Targets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formatting the Target(s)<\/b><\/h3>\n

Click <\/span>Add Data Target<\/b>. Since federation typically combines data sources for an immediate view, select <\/span>Standard out<\/b> so that you can view the results in the console, and then click <\/span>Ok<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBack again on the Data Targets screen, click\u00a0<\/span>Finish <\/b>to complete and open the underlying job script.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can modify this script in the color-coded, syntax-aware editor directly, or by right-clicking in the script (or relevant portions of the outline) to open dialogs that expose the same parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nSeeing Results<\/b><\/h3>\n

Run the job script by right-clicking in the script and selecting <\/span>Run As <\/b>-><\/span> IRI Job<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

View the job output in the Console window in the IRI Workbench.<\/span><\/p>\n
