This feature provides a simple and free or low-cost data federation vehicle for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/nextform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRI NextForm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/cosort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRI CoSort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/voracity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRI Voracity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0platform users. <span id='easy-footnote-1-10083' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/migration\/data-migration\/data-federation-in-iri-workbench\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-10083' title='The free &lt;a href=&quot;http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/nextform\/platforms-pricing&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;Lite&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;\/i&gt;&lt;\/a&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;edition of NextForm will perform many of these functions, though an upgrade to the DB edition or CoSort would be required for DB support and sort-driven transformations, respectively. It can also be used as an enhancement to add fields or attributes that are not supported by the data warehouse application programming interface (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">API<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach is especially useful if some of an organization&#8217;s data is stored offsite by a third-party cloud service provider. It allows the person performing the analysis to aggregate and organize data quickly without having to request synchronization logic or copy the data until it&#8217;s absolutely necessary.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<em> \u00a0&#8211; <\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TechTarget SearchDataManagement.com<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this how-to example, the wizard combines data elements from a database table and a delimited file, and sends pertinent, reformatted information to the console. You can follow similar steps to federate other data combinations and what-if scenarios, and save them to (persistent) targets, if preferred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Target option and field editing dialogs exposed in the same wizard can also be used for cross-calculation, remapping, masking, type conversion, string manipulation, etc.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Getting Underway<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first page of the wizard sets up the job with the location, name and options, such as whether you want to create the job as a script (in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/nextform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NextForm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .ncl or CoSort <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/cosort\/sortcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SortCL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .scl <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/cosort\/sortcl-metadata\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">format<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/voracity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voracity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> .flow file (containing the .*cl script within). For this example, we will call our job file name <\/span><b>datafederation.ncl <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(for NextForm Control Language).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-Job-Specification-File.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10084\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-Job-Specification-File.png\" alt=\"Job Specification File\" width=\"458\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-Job-Specification-File.png 458w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-Job-Specification-File-257x300.png 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<b>Specifying the Source(s)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the second screen, click <\/span><b>Add Data Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to add the first of the two sources used for this example. On the Data Source dialog that opens, select <\/span><b>ODBC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and click <\/span><b>Browse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Select <\/span><b>Oracle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>Data source name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field. From the tables listed in the <\/span><b>Table name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field, select <\/span><b>JOB_HISTORY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Click <\/span><b>OK <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">again to close the Data Source dialog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must also have the metadata for this table. Since we have the metadata for this example, click <\/span><b>Add Existing Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and select <\/span><b>historytable.ddf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the following Save specification message appears:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like to copy the fields in the DDF to the job section? If No is selected then a \/SPECIFICATION with a reference to the DDF will be added<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Yes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to display the fields. Although we have existing metadata for this example, alternatively, you could click <\/span><b>Discover Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create a new ddf for it automatically. See <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-transformation2\/using-the-metadata-discovery-wizard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the Metadata Discovery Wizard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Add Data Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> again to specify the second source. Select <\/span><b>Files <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and click <\/span><b>Browse <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to find and select the file name <\/span><b>jobs.txt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which you should have saved in your file directory. If you have the file in your project folder, enter the filename instead. Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want the format of this file to be CSV, so click <\/span><b>Edit Source Options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the <\/span><b>Format <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field, select <\/span><b>CSV<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Add Existing Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and select <\/span><b>jobs.ddf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When you click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Save specification message opens again. Click <\/span><b>Yes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2-New-Reformat-Job.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10085\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2-New-Reformat-Job.png\" alt=\"New Reformat Job\" width=\"525\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2-New-Reformat-Job.png 525w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2-New-Reformat-Job-266x300.png 266w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b><br \/>\nCreating the Virtual (Combination) Records<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we need to define a pre-action layout (INREC section) to combine specific elements in the different sources, in this case, the JOB_HISTORY table and the jobs.txt file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Pre-Action Layout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Data Sources screen. On screen that opens, click <\/span><b>Edit Pre-Action Layout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This opens the Pre-Action Field Layout editing screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Sources section at the top, select the jobs tab to show the fields in jobs.txt. Click the <\/span><b>JOB_ID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> row and drag it to the Pre-Action section below.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlight that row by clicking it. Now click the Fixed\/Delim icon<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10055 size-full\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: relative; top: 20px; padding: 0 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/F-D-icon.png\" alt=\"Fixed\/Delim icon\" width=\"23\" height=\"20\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the top of the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-Action section. In the <\/span><b>Type <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field, select <\/span><b>Fixed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click the value in the <\/span><b>Size <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">column and change it to <\/span><b>10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
