{"id":8374,"date":"2015-10-29T09:50:16","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T13:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/?p=8374"},"modified":"2025-01-02T13:28:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-02T18:28:14","slug":"flat-file-profiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/iri\/iri-workbench\/flat-file-profiling\/","title":{"rendered":"Flat-File Profiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s Note<\/strong>: In addition to the flat-file profiling wizard in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/workbench\/discover-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data discovery tools<\/a>\u00a0menu group in IRI Workbench described below, IRI has introduced\u00a0robust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-protection\/iri-data-classification\/\">data classification tools<\/a> that enable the application of data masking and transformation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-protection\/applying-field-rules-using-classification\/\">rules<\/a> through data class libraries. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>IRI also provides a\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-protection\/masking-flat-files-in-the-fieldshield-gui\/\">flat-file (directory) data class masking<\/a> wizard <\/em><em>for IRI FieldShield, described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-protection\/masking-flat-files-in-the-fieldshield-gui\/\">here<\/a>, and a file masking wizard for DarkShield that handles structured, semi-structured, and unstructured file discovery and masking in DarkShield, described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-protection\/finding-and-masking-pii-in-files-with-the-darkshield-files-wizard\/\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Data profiling is the essential data discovery process that helps you analyze, classify, cleanse, integrate, mask, and report on data in your repositories. With the information profile processes produce, you can make decisions about data integration and analysis, migration and masking, etc.<\/p>\n<p>As with relational and modern data sources, awareness of the content and character of structured files helps data architects assess and improve the usability, quality, and security of these less sexy, but still mission-critical collections.<\/p>\n<p>IRI previously released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/migration\/data-migration\/unstructured-data-data-restructuring-wizard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dark (document) data<\/a> and relational <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/data-transformation2\/database-profiling-in-iri-workbench\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">database profiling<\/a>\u00a0modules in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/products\/workbench\">IRI Workbench<\/a>\u00a0GUI for all IRI software, built on Eclipse\u2122. \u00a0Similar profiling of\u00a0data in flat files is now also in this GUI\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0which is free to all IRI software product users\u00a0&#8212; and included in\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/solutions\/data-and-database-migration\/file-conversion\/free-nextform-lite-version\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free <em>Lite<\/em><\/a> edition of the IRI NextForm data migration product. In other words, all IRI data profiling tools <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/news\/press-releases\/iri-releases-free-db-file-and-dark-data-profiling-tools-in-eclipse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using a graphical wizard similar to the database profiler, it is now possible to scan files and forensically assess their characteristics. Key statistics &#8212; such as data counts, aggregates, field lengths, minimum and maximum values &#8212; plus fuzzy string matches and patterns, are now readily available and covered in the how-to introduction that follows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inputs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first part of the wizard is the input selection page, which is comprised of a few different elements:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>The display where the selected file to profile will be shown.<\/li>\n<li>The Add Data Source and Edit Source Option buttons. These buttons allow you to select the file to profile.<\/li>\n<li>The Add Existing, Discover, and Convert Metadata buttons. These buttons allow you to select the metadata for the input file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/datasources.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10747\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/datasources.jpg\" alt=\"datasources\" width=\"557\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/datasources.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/datasources-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To choose the input file, click\u00a0<strong>Add Data Source<\/strong>, and select the file to be profiled. Then click the appropriate button to specify metadata for the input file. You can select an existing data definition file (DDF) or auto-create one via metadata discovery or conversion. Once your input file and its metadata are displayed, click <strong>Next<\/strong> \u00a0to move on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second part of the wizard is the field selection page, which displays a table of profiling statistical output to produce, followed by the fields in the file on which you choose to generate the values.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fieldselection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10748\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fieldselection.jpg\" alt=\"fieldselection\" width=\"557\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fieldselection.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fieldselection-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The options matrix will automatically change to represent the fields of the selected file. There are several ways to handle the viewing options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For all options, click the top-left box <strong>All<\/strong>, and all the metadata will be reported.<\/li>\n<li>For basic options only (counting and values), select <strong>Basics<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>For length options only (value lengths), select <strong>Lengths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If you have many fields and want the same option for all of them, click the option name itself, and all the fields will have that option selected.<\/li>\n<li>Once everything is set, click <strong>Next<\/strong> or <strong>Finish<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Expression Search<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A unique choice in the options table is the Expression Search. This option allows you to search\u00a0fields against a variety of search options. These options are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Regular Expressions (Pattern Search). This locates and counts the number of times a value matches the format of a search pattern.<\/li>\n<li>Fuzzy String. This option allows you to search for strings similar to those you enter, and to select or specify search conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Values File. This option allows you to compare a string to every string in a set file\u00a0and count each string that has a match.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Expression Search page has 6 important sections.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A Search Type combo box to select the type of search to perform.<\/li>\n<li>The options group that changes depending on the search type selected.\n<ul>\n<li>Regular Expression: has two buttons; browse which browses existing regular expressions, and\u00a0Create, which allows the creation of new regular expressions.<\/li>\n<li>Fuzzy String: has a counting box that specifies the threshold of the fuzzy search (how close the strings have to be to be considered a match), and a combo box to select the fuzzy search algorithm to use.<\/li>\n<li>Values File: has a Browse button that lets you search for the set file to use for the value search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A text box where you will enter the data for your search.<\/li>\n<li>A drop-down list of the input files to which you can apply the expression search.<\/li>\n<li>A drop-down list of the fields\u00a0to which you can apply the expression search.<\/li>\n<li>A table that lists the\u00a0searches you have created that will be performed by the profiler.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/expressionsearch-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10750\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/expressionsearch-1.jpg\" alt=\"expressionsearch\" width=\"557\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/expressionsearch-1.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/expressionsearch-1-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To create a regular expression filter:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Set the Search Type combo to <strong>Regular Expression<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Browse<\/strong> to (your library of saved expressions), or <strong>Create<\/strong>\u00a0to specify a\u00a0regular expression to use in searching for field values.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>File<\/strong> menu, select the table that contains the field to filter.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Field<\/strong> menu, select the field to which the regular expression should be applied.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add to Table<\/strong>, and an item will appear in the table below that contains the file name, field name, search source, threshold, and regular expression label\u00a0that make up the filter.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat this process for each field to which you want to add a filter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To create a fuzzy search:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Set the Search Type combo to <strong>Fuzzy Search<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Type the string to use for fuzzy search.<\/li>\n<li>Select the number of results to return (this option will appear when Fuzzy Search is selected).<\/li>\n<li>Select the fuzzy search algorithm to use\u00a0(this option will appear when Fuzzy Search is selected).<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>File<\/strong> drop-down menu, select the file \u00a0that contains the field to fuzzy search.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Field<\/strong> drop-down menu, select the field to which the fuzzy search should be performed.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add to Table<\/strong>, and an item will appear in the table below that contains the file name, field name, search source, threshold, and the search type of the fuzzy search to be performed.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat this process for each field where you want to perform a fuzzy search.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To create a values search:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set the Search Type combo to\u00a0<strong>Values File<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Browse<\/strong> to select a set file that the field will be checked against.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>File<\/strong> menu, select the table that contains the field to filter.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Field<\/strong> menu, select the field to which the regular expression should be applied.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add to Table<\/strong>, and an item will appear in the table below that contains the file name, field name, search source, threshold, and values search label\u00a0that make up the filter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Profiling Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<strong>Finish<\/strong>\u00a0to complete the job.
