CoSort and Other IRI Tools to Process DB Data Directly

ODBC Support Allows Transforms, Migrations, Protections, and Reports on Tables

Melbourne, Fla. (October 15, 2010) – Innovative Routines International (IRI), Inc., a leader in big data manipulation software since 1978, is enabling its flagship CoSort package to directly handle data in relational database management systems (RDBMS) through open database connectivity (ODBC) drivers.

Support for table sources and targets will be front-ended in a new GUI built on Eclipse with the next CoSort version -- 9.5 -- due in April, 2011.

According to IRI Business Development VP David Friedland, "CoSort's traditional focus on mainframe sort migration and flat-file ETL has not lent itself to on-line data source connections, but with ODBC process support in the input and output phases of SortCL jobs, worlds of new possibilities open." Data integrated in CoSort can populate or append new or existing tables.

Referring to CoSort's data transformation, migration, protection, and reporting functions, and how they can apply to data in tables, Friedland added that "data warehouse architects, DBAs, CISOs, and BI users will be able to see CoSort and its spin-offs as viable and affordable alternatives to slower and more complex SQL procedures, ETL, and reporting tools. Meanwhile, we'll still offer extreme performance for big data through bulk extracts (FACT), flat-file transforms and reports (SortCL), and pre-sorted bulk loads."

The next version of CoSort will also include a new, free GUI built on Eclipse. To be initially named "IRI Workbench", the GUI will be an integrated development environment (IDE) for SortCL job design, execution, and management that interacts with flat-file data and tables in Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, SAP, MySQL, Sybase, etc. Subsequent releases of IRI Workbench will support IRI's other, CoSort-compatible software products.

CoSort v9.5 will also provide for the selection, transformation, and test data generation of native multi-byte forms and Unicode UTF-16 data, and extend support for numeric data types and field formatting attributes like implied decimal. A general product description is always www.iri.com/products/cosort but detailed technical specifications are in an overview booklet that can be furnished upon request to info@iri.com.
